Youth Council

Youth Council

The BYNC’s Youth Council is a group of positive, action-oriented young people who work together to improve their community and themselves. It is place to talk about and address issues that matter to youth in your neighborhood and throughout Chicago while developing leadership skills and personal responsibility. And it is a place to have fun with other youth through field trips, social events, and community service projects.

Membership on the Youth Council requires commitment. As a member of the Youth Council you will be expected to attend weekly Youth Council meetings, as well as participate in Youth Council events and activities. The time commitment may vary from week to week or month to month, depending on the current events or activities but Youth Council members should anticipate spending a minimum of 25 hours per month working on the Youth Council.

The Youth Council will make decisions about what events and activities it would like to pursue based on the interests of its members. Possible activities include planning and organizing events to benefit the community such as a coat drive or food drive, a community garden or a painting project; assisting with events or fundraisers planned by other organizations such as a walk-a-thon; developing a back-to-school event; hosting a roundtable discussion for youth in the area. The Youth Council will determine its mission and then plan and organize events and activities that support that mission.

Is the Youth Council a volunteer position?

Up to ten positions on the Youth Council may be eligible to be paid a stipend from the Youth Career Development Center, through the City of Chicago Department of Family Support Services. The stipend amount may be $45 per week and is subject to the conditions set forth in the attached documents. Additional Youth Council members may be selected to serve on the Youth Council in an unpaid capacity.
