About the Miss Fiestas Patrias Pageant

The Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council’s 2010 Fiestas Patrias Pageant will allow young Hispanic American women from the Back of the Yards to demonstrate their talents, achievements, beauty, and intelligence to their neighbors, families, and friends. The pageant will culminate in a public coronation ceremony. Tickets for the cermeony are now available, please call or email Fabiola Flores at (773) 523-4416 or fflores@bync.org

While allowing the entire Back of the Yards community to celebrate the culture and traditions of the Hispanic community, the Miss Fiestas Patrias Coronation ceremony will reward young Hispanic American women for their commitment to improving themselves and their community. The competition and coronation ceremony is hosted in three phases that allow the contestants to not only demonstrate their outer beauty, but their inner beauty, cultural awareness, and talents.

The first phase of the competition allows each contestant to choose a state of Mexico and model a traditional costume representing that state. Each contestant will also have an opportunity to introduce themselves and discuss the state of Mexico that they are representing.

During the second phase of the competition, the contestants will perform a dance routine to demonstrate their talents and commitment to the art of dance.

The final phase of the competition allows the contestants to display both their beauty and intelligence. This stage of the pageant will feature the contestants in formal evening gowns and will end with a question and answer period that is designed to give the judges and audience an opportunity to learn about the character and qualities of the Miss Fiestas Patrias contestants.

After the judges make their final decisions, the Fiestas Patrias court is crowned, and a celebration featuring live music, dancing, and cocktails will commence!

Brighton Park Festival 2010 – Labor Day Weekend!

September 4, 2010toSeptember 6, 2010

The Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council created “Brighton Park Festival” in 2008 to promote the economic viability of the Brighton Park and Archer Heights neighborhoods and foster community pride. In a short time, the BYNC has worked with other community leaders, elected officials, and the Chicago Police Department to develop Brighton Park Fest into one of the Southside’s most successful neighborhood festivals – boasting a variety of activities and attractions that entertain, educate, and enrich the whole family.

Carnival rides, games, pony rides, a petting zoo, food vendors, shopping, informational booths, and live musical and cultural performances come together to create a sense of fellowship and cooperation when community members join together in a positive and exciting atmosphere.

This year, the BYNC is celebrating the third anniversary of Brighton Park Fest, and we expect it be the most successful yet!

August 13, 2010 10:00 amtoAugust 15, 2010 7:00 pm

Special Service Area #10 is hosting a Back to School Sidewalk Sale from Friday, August 13 through Sunday, the 15th. The sidewalk sale will take place on Ashland from 42nd to 49th, and on 47th Street from Bishop to Damen. The hours of sidewalk sale will be from 10am – 7pm.

The BYNC and SSA #10 Commissioners are organizing the sidewalk sale to help both businesses and residents. The sidewalk sale is a good opportunity for businesses to stock-up and offer affordable prices on merchandise to the community during the Back to School season, and it is also a great opportunity for local residents to buy their Back to School necessities at bargain prices!

The BYNC will assist businesses by providing advertisements and promotional items to motivate the residents to shop locally and generate additional sales for them. But we will also give out coupons to area residents during the week of sidewalk sale to offer an additional discount on any purchases they make at participating businesses during the sidewalk sale – helping residents save money on their back to school shopping trips!

Join the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council on Friday, August 13 on McDowell street where it intersects 47th and Ashland from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm to receive school supplies, popcorn, refreshments, and information from our participating booths.

For additional information, please call Fabiola at (773) 523-4416 or send her an email at fflores@bync.org.
