Holidays were made bright for over 3,000 local children

In the past month, the holidays were made bright for over 3,000 local children who participated in our two Holiday Toy Drive events; this would not have been possible without your continued generosity and support!
No words can express the impact your kindness had on these children, the joy that radiated from their faces as they met Santa Claus and walked away with their presents. For some of the children, the gift they received at our events may be the only gift they receive this year.
On behalf of the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council, thank you, and Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones!
Thank you to all our supporters!

SSA 39 – 2011 Projects
Landscaping Projects 2011
During the Spring and Summer of 2011, SSA #39 planted over 20 trees along the busy 47th and Kedzie Avenue intersection and along Archer, between Lawndale and 47th Street. 50 new, modern-looking garbage cans were also installed all along Archer, Kedzie and Pulaski.
Several sections of sod were repaired along Kedzie Avenue, between Archer and 47th Street. The raised flower bed along 45th and Kedzie was replanted with bushes and plants.
Other projects include the continued maintenance of the raised stone flower beds built by SSA #39 in 2010. The flower beds are located on 49th and Archer Ave. and 44th and Kedzie Ave.
Remaining projects for 2011 include the removal of damaged sod between 47th Pl. and 48th Pl. In addition, SSA #39 will trim the existing trees, install 2 new trees, and install bushes, plants and mulch; these will be planted on both sides of the street where sod is currently planted. The newly-planted areas will be surrounded by ornamental fencing to protect the vegetation while maintaining an aesthetic view. Permeable pavers will also be installed along the edges to allow space for trucks moving in and out of the surrounding driveways.
Further streetscape and landscaping projects are planned for 2012. For more information, please contact Miguel Moreno, SSA 39 Program Director, at 773-523-4416 ext. 121.
Façade Rebate Program 2011
In December 2010, SSA #39 introduced the first Façade Rebate Program for the businesses in the district. All businesses along Archer Ave. (between California and Karlov), on Kedzie (from Archer to 48th Place) and Pulaski (from 45th to 51st) were eligible. The rebate covered any and all improvements to the storefront of a building, and any large part of a building highly visible from the sides. Parking lot improvements, roofing repairs, and signage were among some of the eligible improvements.
The rebate was for 50% of improvement costs, up to a maximum of $10,000 per property.
5 businesses quickly took advantage of the program by submitting all required paperwork and permitting requirements to the City of Chicago. Over $42,000 in rebates were distributed to businesses, including St. Anthony’s Health, Lucy’s Fashions, and Romo Dental.
The program does have a small waitig list at the moment. However, the program is scheduled to begin in January 2012. For more information, please contact Miguel Moreno, SSA 39 Program Director, at 773-523-4416 ext. 121.
Model Block Program 2011
The Lakota Group and Bailey Edwards Architectural Firm have completed first drafts for improvements and their costs for sections of Archer Ave. and Kedzie Ave. The SSA #39 Commission is currently reviewing the report and creating a plan to begin implementation of the physical improvements for several storefronts along Archer and Kedzie Avenues. Long-term goals are to see sections of the SSA totally modernized; these goals would require close cooperation with CDOT and several other City departments. SSA #39 will post more information about this project as it becomes available.
2011 Christmas Giveaway at Brighton Park
On Saturday December 10, Santa made his way to Columbia Explorers Academy, bringing a smile to the faces of many Brighton Park children. Rows of wrapped dolls, board games, teddy bears and other presents filled the room as volunteer elves helped Santa deliver a present to each child.
The 2011 Christmas Giveaway in Brighton Park sponsored by the Special Service Area (SSA) #39 and the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council (BYNC) brought over 250 local families, who were also welcomed with a warm pancake breakfast and a lively BYNC Ballet Folklorico performance.
The Family Health Network offered instant family pictures to participants throughout the event while ACCESS and Harmony Health Plan gave out books, gloves and winter hats.
Each year, local residents, organizations, and businesses help the program reach its goal by donating money and new, unwrapped gifts. This year, neighborhood youth and local volunteers helped wrap close to 300 toys that were given away to the families that most deserve it.
